Nebraska Football should be in very good hands with these two.

It’s no secret that when he is on his game, Adrian Martinez can be one of the best quarterbacks in college football. It is also no secret that head coach Scott Frost has done a great job of getting the most out of his players.  Although the results weren’t what either Martinez or Frost wanted them to be in 2018, I imagine it was quite a learning experience for them. Now, in their second year together, they may be making strides.

At times last year, the playcalling was very simplistic. I imagine that was due to the fact that both Martinez and the rest of the offense were trying to get up to speed with what the then-new head coach wanted to do. I can’t blame them for wanting to keep things simple. After all, the program itself was changing, and the sense of easiness and grasp of knowledge probably wasn’t there at times. A simplistic playbook was probably better for all involved, as at the very least it gave everybody a chance to just get their feet under them

Now, the expectations are undoubtedly being raised. That is a good thing, as now opposing teams have watched the film and have an idea of what the Nebraska Football offense can do. As defenses change with the Nebraska Football game plan, Nebraska has to make sure they give defenses new looks game in and game out. With so many talented players on the offensive side of the football, that is certainly an achievable goal. Unlike last year, Nebraska now has depth at multiple positions and players that can single-handedly take over a game.

I am excited to see what other tricks Scott Frost has in his proverbial bag. There is no doubt that he is a very smart coach when it comes to game planning and ways to run a play. For his part, Martinez is smart at making decisions, especially considering the fact that he is an underclassman who, as we may sometimes forget, is only a sophomore. Now, it sounds like the Nebraska Football playbook is going to expand a bit. That will only mean good things for both the offense and the team itself.

As Martinez told Parker Gabriel of the Lincoln Journal Star, the offense may be challenging, but there are certainly rewards for learning it.

"“It’s grown a lot. Frost has a unique way of calling plays, the way he pairs certain routes together and just concepts, it takes some getting used to,” Martinez said. “The first game I think we were both kind of conservative with each other, and then as the season progressed, I think he got more comfortable with my abilities and I got more comfortable with the calling and we were on the same page.“Moving forward, I think we’re going to stay on the same page, and I think I felt that this spring. Just a real understanding of what was expected of me out there.”"

It’s interesting that Martinez admits that things were conservative at times last year. Honestly, I wouldn’t expect anything different, as both coach and quarterback were getting used to each other. Now, hopefully the increased comfort level will lead to a successfully-ran offense in the fall. It’s not that last year wasn’t successful, but the offense wasn’t where it needed to be at times. That is about to change.

When the coach and the quarterback are on the same page, that is always a good thing. As long as Martinez and Frost know what’s expected of each other, there should be no reason why these two can’t lead Nebraska to big things. It all starts in just a couple of weeks against South Alabama. Buckle your seatbelts, it is going to be a wild ride.
