The position change for Nebraska Football was announced on Tuesday.

One member of Nebraska Football is going to undergo a position change. Senior Eric Lee Jr. , who was originally a cornerback, is going to move to safety. This news was first reported by Sam McKewon of the Omaha World-Herald.

When you take a look at Lee’s build, safety seems like more of a fit. He is only 6 feet, but he weighs 215 pounds. From playing the quarterback position, he already has tremendous mobility, and that should allow him to cover a lot of field in a short amount of time. As a safety, you need to be able to do that. Not only that, you need to be able to hit hard, and Lee can certainly do that.

More from Husker Corner

When you look at his statistics from last season, they are not really anything to write home about. He recorded seven solo tackles, and 13 in total. As a safety, those numbers are probably going to go way up.

It is interesting that he is undergoing a position change as a senior. To me, body shape is not enough of a reason why he would do so. Maybe he feels as though Nebraska Football is particularly deep at corner. To some extent, they are, and the freshman class is undoubtedly going to put pressure on the upperclassman throughout the course of camp.

Nebraska secondary coach Travis Fisher certainly recognizes that Lee’s body type may not be conducive to playing quarter. That is perfectly fine. It’s tough to find fast cornerbacks these days. Especially with how the receivers seem to be evolving into more speed threats than ever before, having a good set of corners that can run is imperative. Hopefully, Nebraska Football has enough cornerbacks on the roster that can do that. Fisher talked about it on Husker Sports Nightly on Tuesday.

"Senior Eric Lee has moved from cornerback to safety, Fisher said, in part because Lee likes to play at a heavier weight that’s not entirely conducive to playing corner. Lee “did a great job” learning the safety position.“Eric Lee is a guy that I’d probably guess didn’t even like football when I first got here,” Fisher said. “He likes football now. He’s in here, too.”"

We will have to see how it all plays out for Nebraska Football. They have a lot of weapons on defense, weapons that should be able to make the entire unit one to be feared. Adding Lee to the safety position, and having the luxury to do that without any second thoughts, certainly speaks to that. I’ll be interested to see how he plays, and I’m sure the positional transition will not be a difficult one.
