Nebraska Basketball: James Palmer starts Summer League play off right
The Nebraska Basketball alum had a great game on Sunday.
There is no question how much James Palmer Jr meant to the Nebraska Basketball program during his time in Lincoln. With his Nebraska career firmly behind him, it’s now time to see if he can mean as much to a team in the National basketball Association. Currently on the Phoenix Suns summer league team, Palmer made his debut on Sunday and he put on a show.
He was the second-leading scorer for Phoenix. He put on a show, scoring 23 points in 33 minutes of play. He went eight-of-18 from the field, shooting at a 44% clip. He went four-of-seven from behind the three-point line as well. In addition, he was active on defense, recording four total rebounds and a steal.

A game like this is great to see. Palmer was not sure if he was even going to make a team. Now that he has the opportunity, he is making the most of it. It seems like he showed a little bit of everything in this game. From his drives to the hoop, to his three-point shooting ability, he evidently showed the Suns exactly what he could bring to the table.
There was no doubt that Palmer was one of the most prolific scorers in the Big Ten Conference when he was on top of his game. He would be unstoppable some games. With his ability to create space for step-back shots, as well as his seamless ability to drive to the line and initiate contact at the very least, he brought a little bit of everything to the table. If he can do that for the Suns, he will be in very good shape moving forward.
Lately, it seems like the NBA has been consistently calling fouls that are initiated by contact. Palmer is not afraid to put his body in harm’s way to get to the free throw line. That should also translate well to the NBA. His varied skill set was certainly on display Sunday. It will be interesting to see what he does his next time out. The Suns play the Grizzlies on Tuesday.
Hopefully, he will be able to use the Summer League as a chance to make his case for staying on the Suns permanently. Whatever the case may be, there is no doubt he is representing Nebraska Basketball well. I certainly wish him the best of luck moving forward. Hopefully, we will see him on a court come the fall.
