Nebraska Basketball: Isaiah Roby drafted by rising Dallas Mavericks
Nebraska Basketball was represented on Draft day.
In what was a crazy NBA Draft, Isaiah Roby was selected to take his talents to the NBA. He was the first Nebraska Basketball player in 20 years to be taken by a professional team.
He is off to the Dallas Mavericks as the Mavericks acquired him via a trade with the Detroit Pistons. Taken in the second round with the 45th overall pick, it was great to see him drafted, and honestly that’s where I expected him to go. Many mock drafts had him being selected in that range, with some even considering him a borderline first-round pick. Nevertheless, he is off to Dallas where he joins a team full of tremendous talent.
For those who follow the NBA, Luka Doncic is quite the player. His scoring ability and perimeter shooting made him a must-watch player last year as a rookie. Kristaps Porzingis may be on the roster come the fall, however he is an impending free agent. The Mavericks are trying to build a team while also being able to compete. Roby can help them do that.
He will be able to give them solid scoring both from mid-range and in the paint. As we saw at Nebraska, he is a very effective spot-up shooter. That could translate well for him, especially with the Mavericks. They have many players who can pass the ball adequately, and that could lead to open looks. That was one of Roby’s strengths last year, especially towards the end of the season. He would have games where he could knock down spot-up shots at will.

Jay Bilas said during the Draft telecast that Roby had a very impressive Combine. Personally, I don’t really take too much stock into results from the Combine. However, I think this is a case where it helped Roby. The Combine is more of an asset to unknown names and fringe players than it is to big-time stars. Roby balled out at the combine, and it certainly helped him on Thursday evening in my estimation.
Roby is still a little raw in terms of talent. However, he should be able to represent Nebraska Basketball well in the NBA. I see him being the type of player that will not have a Hall-of-Fame career but will be able to carve out a nice niche for himself. That would certainly be a tremendous career in my book. Congratulations Isaiah, we will certainly miss you in Lincoln.
