Nebraska Baseball announced their latest coaching move on Friday.

Nebraska Baseball has a new coach. After early reports that a coach announcement would be coming this weekend, the news came earlier than expected on Friday. Will Bolt is the newest Huskers head coach.

Bolt has been an assistant coach at Texas A&M for the last five seasons. Bolt played for Nebraska from the 1998-2002 seasons as the program was on the rise. He was a starter for all four of his years in Lincoln, and was a captain for the 2001 and 2002 Nebraska Baseball teams. Both of those teams made it to the College World Series.

He has an impressive resume to show for his time at Lincoln. He played in 251 games, starting 242 of them. In 922 at-bats, he had 281 hits. 56 of those were doubles. He also proved to be a very solid fielder, totaling 956 assists.

Aside from his playing days, his experience with the Nebraska Baseball program is a little more recent. He served as an assistant coach under Darren Erstad from the 2012-14.

I really like this hire. For one, he is someone that truly has a passion for Nebraska Baseball. Coming into the coaching search, I wasn’t too sure what type of candidate Nebraska would be looking for moving forward.

It’s a very intriguing situation. The program is in a position where they can have success for many seasons. I’m happy they brought someone who knows the tradition of Nebraska Baseball. Hopefully, he can continue their winning ways of the previous regime.

With a solid group of returners, and steady development from last year’s recruiting class, this has the potential to be a smooth transition for Bolt. Between his experiences as an assistant both at Texas A&M and Nebraska, as well as his playing days, this is a coach that is very well-versed in the game of baseball. I am excited to see where he takes this program moving forward.

Bolt is set to make $300,000 over the course of five years. An official press conference is expected next week.

Athletic director Bill Moos has made it abundantly clear that he wants to reshape the coaching staffs for each of the athletic programs. We have seen it with football and head coach Scott Frost, and in basketball with the hiring of Fred Hoiberg. I give credit to Moos from wanting to build his own identity in athletics.

Overall, this is a very good move for Nebraska Baseball. I’m curious to see where Bolt will take them, and I certainly hope the College World Series, much like Bolt’s playing days, is a viable destination. Only time will tell.
