Nebraska Baseball: Furious comeback leads Huskers past Connecticut
Nebraska Baseball got the job done.
Five years ago. That was the last time Nebraska Baseball won a regional game. Heading into Friday’s contest against Connecticut, they wanted to end the drought. The Huskers did in a huge way.
However, as predicted, this was not an easy win. UConn scored two runs in the first inning and put Nebraska Baseball in a hole early. In hindsight, maybe this was a good test for the team. They were faced with adversity, and now it was up to them to respond to it in a big way. They did just that in the following half of the inning as homered to make it a 2-1 ballgame.

The Huskies weren’t done however and they kept pouring on the lead. With men on base, a fielder’s choice extended UConn’s to 3-1. Another single in the inning made it a 4-1 ballgame and once again, Nebraska Baseball had some work to do. Again, they responded to the challenge. With two men on, Cam Chick singled to left field to score and make it a 4-2 advantage in favor of the Huskies. Nevertheless, there was some light at the end of the tunnel and the deficit was cut in half.
The party continued in the third inning, as Spencer Schwellenbach made the most of his at-bat. He singled to left scoring hallmark and moving check to third. Again it was a nice answer in response to the blistering offensive attack of UConn. Angelo Altavilla continued to have an impact on the game as in the ending, he reached base on an infield single which scored check. Now, Nebraska Baseball began to have some breathing room and that was comforting to see, as they could begin to separate themselves now.
Following a fielder’s choice double play by Gunner Hellstrom gave Nebraska of the lead for the first time in this game. The additional run also served as a spark plug for the rest of the offense as you can see them gain confidence with each run.
. The fifth ending was a different story as Hellstrom was up to his old tricks again. This time, he singled to center with Schwellenbach on second base, bringing him home. This now gave the Huskers a 6-4 advantage and things appeared to be in control. However, the Huskies came storming back in the bottom of the fifth ending as they managed to put several runners on base. A single hit by Christian Fedko would drive in another run for Connecticut, and again they managed to cut the deficit. However, Nebraska would score two more runs and managed to hold the lead, winning 8-5.
Nate Fisher did the bulk of the work for Nebraska baseball on the mound. In 4.2 innings of work, he gave up 13 hits and five runs. Robbie Palkert managed to get the win for Nebraska Baseball as he gave up five hits and struck out four in 3 1/3 innings. It was truly a team effort both at the plate and on the mound. They will need that same type of mentality heading into their next game.
They will play the winner of Oklahoma State-Harvard which is currently in progress.
