Mills will add a new layer to the Nebraska Football offense.

For the Nebraska Football offense, the possibilities seem endless.  Head coach Scott Frost seems to think so as well. With the arrival of Dedrick Mills, he is yet another weapon in what is shaping up to be a loaded offense. We have seen his potential at Georgia Tech, and now he will be bringing that to Nebraska.

More from Husker Corner

Personally, I think he will play a huge part in the offense. I expect more balance from that unit this year, and for the first time in quite a while, the Cornhuskers can utilize both the air and ground game to create a lethal offensive attack. Even with the status of Maurice Washington up in the air, Nebraska has enough depth at the running back position where they can still make plenty of noise. Mills adds a completely different element to the Nebraska Football offense. It is due partly to the offense he played in at Georgia Tech. With their offense being so unorthodox, that allowed for them to confuse defenses.

Hopefully, the Cornhuskers can employ some of that confusion come the fall. The fact that Mills has not played in Division I college football for a few seasons also adds the elements of surprise. Sure, there are going to be tapes that are available once the season starts, but there is quite a difference between seeing film and facing live action. Nevertheless, Frost is very optimistic about what he can do with Mills and the offense as he told 247Sports.

"“I think he’s going to give us a bigger back,” Frost said. “We’re going to be built on speed and want skill players that can really run. He’s a guy that’s bigger in stature and is going to be able to get us some tough yards. He’s got a background from an option school back in the day so he’s done some other things that we might be able to utilize as well.”"

The way Scott Frost makes it sound, Mills will open up the Nebraska Football offense even more. If the Cornhuskers can adopt more option plays in the offense, that will just add another dimension to it. With the amount of speed guys they have, combined with the experience of Mills in the option offense, this could be very dangerous for opposing defenses. I could see situations where Nebraska football would use the option against a tough run defense. There are going to be teams where you cannot just simply hand the ball off and run straight up the middle. You’re going to have to get a little bit creative.

Mills allows for Nebraska football to have that creativity. That is something they were lacking last season. I can’t wait to see what Scott Frost and his staff does with the offense. It’s encouraging to hear him talk so excitedly about Mills, as I have always pegged Mills as a guy that will be able to help the offense right away. It sounds like Frost and I are on the same page. I’ll be interested to see if the playbook is expanded with Mills in the fold.

This is a player that many of us have been waiting for, and now it looks like it is Dedrick Mills’ time to shine.
