The philosophy of Nebraska Basketball is becoming clear.

Thursday, a plethora of Nebraska Athletics coaches met with the media. Among them was Nebraska Basketball head coach Fred Hoiberg. As he spoke to the media ($), we got a better idea of what his philosophies will be like come the 2019-20 basketball season.

From the sounds of it, we will have a team that is selfless. The emphasis of working together was apparent per Hoiberg’s words. This it sounds like a good thing in theory. The question will be how it all fits together.

More from Husker Corner

When you consider that there is technically only one returner from last year’s team, there is going to be a lot of moving parts and new faces. Not only that, there is going to be a lot of talent on this team. It is always difficult to put a talented team together, especially when you have several players on a team that can take over a game individually.

I admire Hoiberg’s philosophy and his willingness to try to create that team environment early on. It should make for a very enjoyable transition year as the combination of graduating seniors and a new coach initially left the Nebraska Basketball roster barren. With Thorir Thorbjarnarson being  the lone returner from last year’s team, the Nebraska Basketball program will quite literally be a new team come the fall.

Nevertheless, Hoiberg is confident that this group of Nebraska Basketball players will mesh together. I will say this, if they do mesh together, this group will be something special. There is a little bit of everything on this roster. From players who can shoot the three-ball to players who can drive to the basket, there’s a little bit of skill set everywhere. This is a very balanced team, especially when you consider that they were assembled just over the course of a couple weeks.

"“All I’ve seen on these players is what I’ve watched on film,” Hoiberg said. “I’ve watched a lot of them and I like what I’ve seen, but again, you don’t know how the whole thing will come together when the guys haven’t played together. But that’s one thing that we’re going to stress, is going out there and having one common goal and not worrying about individual glory and going out there and doing it as a team. I’m confident that we’ll do that.”"

The coach noted that because they do not have a ton of players with size inside, they will have to compensate a little bit. That is where assistant Doc Sadler should come in. Hoiberg feels as though Doc can provide solutions to overcome the lack of size. Personally, I think Sadler would be a great fit in that role. Size isn’t necessarily as important in today’s game as having multiple scorers is. I’m not dismissing size entirely, it is still important.

It was great to hear Hoiberg talk about what his plans for Nebraska Basketball were. I think Nebraska Basketball could have a ton of success in the coming years. The blueprint is certainly there to succeed. Now, everyone, coaches included, have to execute it.
