Nebraska Football: Mohamed Barry named to award watch list
The Nebraska Football linebacker is getting some national attention.
It seems like the preseason accolades just keep coming for Nebraska Football. Saturday, it was announced that Mohamed Barry is one of the finalists on the Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list.
According to the award’s official website, the Lott IMPACT Trophy is given to the player “who exhibits the same characteristics Lott embodied during his distinguished career: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.” Barry certainly showed all of those characteristics last season, and looks to head into the 2019 campaign as a senior leader. If he can build off the numbers he had last season, he could win this award easily.

Notching 112 tackles last year, he proved to be all over the field. He complemented a great group of veterans, and he gave Nebraska Football a weapon that could be counted on day in and day out. This year, Nebraska Football still has playmakers, but some of the linebackers lack experience. Barry will have to pick up some of the slack left by the departures of the veterans. Even still, the Nebraska Football defense looks to be in great shape for 2019.
A big season here would do wonders for Barry’s draft stock. He is currently projected to go in the sixth round in next year’s draft. Another 100-plus tackle season would definitely make his stock rise. More and more, teams are looking for linebackers that are not only solid fundamentally, but can also make an impact. Barry certainly fits that criteria, and I will be very excited to see him in the professional ranks.
This is just another reaffirmation that Nebraska Football could have a special year in 2019. With players like Barry in their last year of football, this team is stacked with veteran leadership. With Tony Tuioti’s defensive approach appearing to be one of aggressiveness, that could increase Barry’s numbers exponentially. Oftentimes with a new coach, you see veterans who have played in one system their entire career struggle a bit. This change could benefit Barry as aggressiveness is one of his strengths.
It’s great to see Nebraska Football continue to get recognition from the national media. Something tells me that this is only the beginning of it all, and we may see the Huskers get the respect they finally deserve. That would be a major boost for the program and everyone involved, as everybody has worked hard to get the Huskers back on the right track.
