The Nebraska Basketball coach is taking his own approach.

The roster  that Fred Hoiberg and the Nebraska Basketball coaching staff have been putting together is truly remarkable. Although I do feel bad for the players who have been told to leave the program, it is an inevitable situation for a rebuilding program. It may not always be the most ideal situation, but sometimes,  it is necessary.

Nebraska Athletics director Bill Moos shared his thoughts on the roster turnover for the program Wednesday. Appearing on the Sports Nightly radio program on the Husker Sports Network, a caller asked him if the roster turnover for the basketball team was “not the Nebraska way.” Moos put together a very measured response, and one that I agree with.

"“Once a new coach comes in and inherits a roster, he or she has to make some kinds of decisions along the way if this young player … is going to have a realistic chance to play in the new system. And we’re not doing him any favors if he’s just going to be sitting there unhappy,” Moos said."

Honestly, Moos hit the nail on the head with this response. Although it is not ideal for the player to be no longer a part of the program, Hoiberg and his staff have to put together a roster that they feel they can win with. Chances are that Hoiberg has been helping the players asked to leave find new homes. I highly doubt he is leaving the players in the dark. That would certainly not be the Nebraska way.

Players being asked to leave has  is nothing to do with being rude or disrespectful. Rather, it is just so Hoiberg can get the team he wants to build around. We’ve already seen players from the Tim Miles era want to come back. Thor is perhaps the best example of this. He should be able to do well for Coach Hoiberg.

Nebraska Basketball needs to focus on winning for the upcoming season, and with the recruits they have brought in, they have shown that they are committed to doing so, not only now but in the future.  Of course, I wish the best of luck to all players who will be finding new homes. As for the “Nebraska Way?” If “The Mayor” is not following it, so be it. This is a new era of Nebraska Basketball and he is just constructing the roster in a way that can help the program succeed not only now but in the future. I certainly can’t fault him for that.
