Nebraska Football wants to build around their quarterback.

Nebraska Football head coach Scott Frost definitely has the right mindset when it comes to building a team around his star quarterback. Speaking on 590 AM in Omaha, ($) Frost definitely wants to maximize the use of Adrian Martinez while he still has him. After all, the latter may not be in Lincoln for much longer. Frost knows that he needs to build a proper team around Martinez.

It’s encouraging to see that Frost has a plan to get the most out of his quarterback. It’s also encouraging to hear him voice his desire to try to build the best team possible. Too often, coaches go with the status quo approach and do not surround their best athletes with top talent. That does not appear to be the case for Nebraska Football. The program wants to win, and they want to win right now.

Admittedly, the “win now” approach is kind of risky in sports. Particularly in college football, it is a hard thing to do. With players graduating every four years or so, it is hard to build a definite structure for the team. That is of course not counting the times players leave school early to go to the National Football League. In a day and age where NFL contracts are absolutely crazy, I can’t say I blame the players.

That is exactly this type of situation Martinez is in. He has the potential to leave school early, and will certainly be picked up by an NFL team when his time comes. Especially with the NFL becoming more of a passing league, he would be a great fit for many teams. As for now though, Nebraska Football should do everything they can to surround him with the best possible set of players. They certainly have a lot of options to choose from.

"“We feel like we have a really good quarterback, and we’re in a hurry to try to surround him with the type of weapons that we need in order to have a really good offense,” the coach said. “You’re kind of on a clock with that. We feel good about our young quarterbacks, but while we’ve got a guy like Adrian, we want to surround him with as many weapons as we can, and guys who can change games.”"

To me, the “clock” Frost is referring to is the fact that Martinez is going to leave school early. Luke McCaffrey is set to be the quarterback once Martinez takes over. However, as talented as McCaffrey is, there is no doubt that Nebraska Football has a special player on their hands. They truly do need to make the most of what they have right now and begin assembling a team that can make some noise in the Big Ten West. If they don’t, we’ll have to start from scratch at the quarterback position.

Next. Three May arrivals you should be excited for. dark

It is refreshing to hear a coach talk about the fact that he wants to build around his quarterback. Time will tell if the plan will work, but it sounds good. If his rebuilding efforts are anything like his recruiting efforts, we could be in for fun times in Lincoln. That is certainly something to look forward to.
