Nebraska Football may have a stud on their hands.
Garrett Nelson may be in for a bigger role than originally anticipated. The freshman linebacker enrolled in the Nebraska Football program on January 7. Now, he is turning heads and impressing coaches.
A three-star recruit from Scottsbluff, Nelson is your prototypical outside linebacker. Measuring in at six-foot-three, 235 pounds, he certainly is a tremendous athlete. He may be put to the test early. As noted by Brian Christopherson of 247Sports, head coach Scott Frost has spoken glowingly of Nelson.

The fact that Nelson is attracting so much attention is good in this case. The Nebraska Football program will certainly need depth at the linebacker position and Nelson certainly has the talent to be able to make an impact. The fact that he is a local kid also makes it fun to follow his progress as well. With so many big names in this recruiting class, he is a name that could fly under the radar easily. That is certainly not a knock on him, it just is a testament to the fact that how talented the recruiting class is.
"Scott Frost will acknowledge, with younger players, “It’s really hard to evaluate them until they completely know what they’re doing.” But both Rogers and outside linebacker Garrett Nelson are “both guys who had a really good spring and it has set themselves up to be right in the mix come fall.”"
This is also a testament to the fact that Nebraska Football is doing well recruiting. If they can have freshman who can come in and make an impact right away, that is a great thing. Too often when it comes to recruiting glasses, players don’t perform well they land up either sitting on the bench or transferring. If Nebraska Football can develop Nelson properly for all four years, they could have a very solid linebacker on their hands.
It’s great to see a guy like Nelson get so much praise already over the course of spring ball. Of course, I don’t put too much stock in the spring ball as you all know. What he does in August and the fall will really tell me what type of player he is. However, judging by how he performed in high school, and yes that may be comparing apples to oranges, he certainly has potential.
It will be interesting to see if Nelson is able to become an impact player for Nebraska Football. Things are aligning for him to be able to have opportunities. Now, he needs to make the most of them. If he keeps playing at a high level, you may see him on many Saturdays in Lincoln.
