The backup quarterback situation for Nebraska Football may be gaining clarity.
Perhaps one of the biggest questions that has been asked this spring ball for Nebraska Football is who the No. 2 player will be at quarterback. Now, many of you know my stance on it. I am on the “Let’s decide in the preseason” train, and I will still stay there. However, it appears that Nebraska Football may have an idea about who will be No. 2 come the beginning of the season.
As the glow of the spring game begins to wear off, head coach Scott Frost said Saturday that Vedral would get the No. 2 spot if Nebraska Football had to play a game today. That is certainly an interesting pick, but it is one that I can get behind.

Vedral had a great afternoon Saturday, going 13-of-19 for 144 yards. He also showed he was fleet of foot, carrying the ball two times for 17 yards. In a game that he needed to perform well in, he did just that. I wanted him to show me something on Saturday, and he certainly delivered.
It would also be a great story of sorts. Vedral didn’t even get to play for the Nebraska Football program until October 2018. Now, he has a realistic chance to be the second option on the quarterback depth chart. Will he get a ton of playing time there? My guess is probably not. It would take a lot for Adrian Martinez not to be starting a game for the Cornhuskers. Of course, injuries happen in football and there may be a case where Martinez will not be able to play. However, the backup quarterback role on the team will most likely be reserved for either garbage time or if a freak injury occurs.
Nevertheless, it is a step in the right direction for Vedral. Again, fall camp has yet to take place and that is where we’ll see the roster even itself out. Even still Vedral has to be encouraged by his performance on Saturday and it seems like the head coach is as well. As much as I have hyped him up over the course of the offseason, Luke McCaffrey is still too young to have a shot at backing up Martinez. He played well on Saturday, and there are certainly reasons to be excited about the future. However, it is not his time yet.
Noah Verdal took a gamble and went with Scott Frost to Nebraska from UCF. Now, it appears that the gamble may be paying off. Although he probably doesn’t necessarily want to play the backup role, Verdal is in a much better position than he was a year ago. He had an opportunity and he seized it. Now, he awaits his turn to show what he’s got under center.
