Nebraska Basketball: Powerhouse staff looking to lead way for Huskers
Nebraska Basketball should be in good hands moving forward.
We do not know what the results will be for Fred Hoiberg and Nebraska Basketball in the coming years. One thing is for certain however: they possess a ton of talent on the coaching staff. My hope is that will lead to getting talented players to the Nebraska Basketball program and that winning will follow suit. I know, one thing at a time. However, with the official staff being announced on Friday, Nebraska Basketball seems to be in good hands.

For one, this staff has experience. In addition to Fred Hoiberg himself Matt Abdelmassih, Doc Sadler and Armon Gates will round out this coaching staff. Gates was a holdover from Tim Miles’ staff, so he will definitely be able to help Hoiberg identify what worked well last season as the program itself undergoes a transitional period. Sadler has been in Lincoln before as you all know. That should be able to help Hoiberg as he looks to adjust to the culture of Nebraska Basketball it’s not as if the expectations are immense. Nebraska Basketball fans want to see wins, and anything less is unacceptable.
I am very excited about this staff. Abdelmassih has been tabbed as a great recruiter, so that will certainly help the program. Sadler and Gates are both tremendous basketball minds and that will certainly help in terms of strategy and situational play. Many times when a new coaching staff is created, you have a bunch of new coaches trying to figure out the ropes. This coaching staff has been through it all, and they have each experienced different levels of success. I don’t think it’s going to be a situation where there are “too many hands in the cookie jar” so to speak. They should all be able to find their own roles as coaches and be able to help put together a winning program.
Hoiberg had nothing but great things to say about his coaching staff earlier this week. From his comments, Nebraska Basketball fans should be excited about things to come. After all, who wouldn’t be optimistic?
"“The great thing about Doc is that everybody is more excited to see him than me now,” Hoiberg said. “Also, I’ve been impressed with Armon. He knows the lay of the land around here and the guys on the roster, and is a high level recruiter. Matt Abdelmassih has been with me since I was in the front office with the Timberwolves and brought him on to Iowa State and is one of the most important hires I’ve ever made and does a good job of connecting with kids and getting our foot in the door with high-level players.”"
From the coach’s comments, I can tell he is certainly comfortable with the staff he has put together. This definitely was a calculated and thought-out staff. Perhaps the thing I am most impressed with is the fact that these coaches were all willing to come together on one staff. Hoiberg hit a home run with the hiring of Sadler. Although the results may not have always been there, he was certainly a Nebraska fan favorite. He is perhaps the most intriguing hire, at least for me, when it comes to this staff.
This is a powerhouse coaching staff. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see what the results are before we can officially tab them “the greatest coaching staff of all time.” However, if each of the coaches strengths meld together, this program could have an accelerated rebuild and get back to the NCAA tournament in no time. It will be fun to see them all work together and I truly hope for the best for Nebraska Basketball. It’s a new era, and it’s certainly starting with a bang.
