Andrew Bunch: Having a “good day”

Andrew Bunch is kind of in a difficult position. Last season, he was the team’s backup quarterback. This season, he is still in that role per the most recent depth chart from OurLads.com. However, Luke McCaffrey is certainly breathing down his neck in terms of competition. Now, he must work to hold his spot at number two.

The Saturday, it will be important for Bunch to have a good day. That means he has to play mistake-free football to the best of his ability. Obviously, this is the spring game and kinks will have to be worked out and mistakes will be made. However, he needs to make certain he makes the most of his opportunity here. His experience and seniority over some of the other quarterbacks should definitely be able to help him. He is perhaps the one who is most familiar with the offensive system besides Adrian Martinez. Although I certainly make it sound like he should be concerned about his performance on Saturday, he really shouldn’t overthink it.  He should just focus on having a good day. That means avoiding overthinking things, making sure his reads are quick, throwing  passes to his receivers that they can go up and get if necessary.

There is no doubt that despite all of the competition, Bunch still wants to be here. He told the World-Herald earlier this week that he loves playing for the coaching staff. He also reiterated the fact that he loves his teammates. It appears he is in it for the long haul. That is certainly a great sign as that means he’s a team player.

"“Nebraska’s where I want to be,” Bunch said to the Omaha World-Herald earlier this week. “It’s the team I want to play for, it’s the team I’ll go to war with. I love playing for Coach (Scott) Frost and Coach (Mario) Verduzco.”"

The backup quarterback battle should be strong between Vedral and Bunch. It’ll be interesting to see who wins the battle as both players are looking to make a name for themselves within the program. Right now, I still think it’s Bunch’s to lose. You can also say that Matt Masker should be in the conversation as well. Right now, I think Masker is the odd man out in a crowded quarterback room, but you never know. For now, Bunch just has to worry about himself.
