Nebraska Basketball: Could Doc Sadler make a return to Lincoln?
Nebraska Basketball could see a familiar face come back.
A familiar face may be coming back to Lincoln. Southern Mississippi head basketball coach Doc Sadler announced his resignation on Thursday, leaving open the possibility that he could join the Nebraska Basketball coaching staff. According to a report from Brian Christopherson of 247Sports, Sadler was planning to meet Thursday morning with his Southern Mississippi athletic director Jeremy McClain to discuss his future with the program.
Sadler had an interesting six-year career with Nebraska. He would lead them to winning seasons in all but two of the years he coached there. With three NIT appearances, he was never able to reach the grand spectacle of NCAA postseason play. His best mark would come in the 2007-08 season, when the Nebraska Basketball program reached the second round of the NIT. In six years, he compiled a 101-89 record, which included a dismal 34-64 record in conference play.

While at Southern Mississippi, he has not fared as well. His best season was this past year when he led the program to a 20-13 record which included a winning record in conference play. That was good for second in Conference USA and the program made it to the first round of the CBI. Overall, he leaves Southern Miss with a 56-94 record.
In this situation, I would hope that his track record at Nebraska would follow him here again. He could be a great assistant coach on an already strong staff. To his credit, Fred Hoiberg has done a nice job of putting together experienced coaches for a new position and new era of Nebraska Basketball. Landing Sadler here would be another win as the head coach looks to continue rounding out his staff.
For one, Sadler knows what Nebraska is all about. Although he may not have gotten the results the fans wanted, he understands the culture of Nebraska athletics and what it takes to win games here. Especially as an assistant, his knowledge would be invaluable. This is someone if you’re Coach Hoiberg that you should feel comfortable relying on, especially in terms of the ins and outs of college basketball. To his credit, the head coach has a lot of that himself, but it is always helpful to have a second opinion on things.
If Sadler were to become a member of the Nebraska Basketball coaching staff once again, that would be another big get for the program. Experience on a coaching staff is key, especially when the program is rebuilding. Sadler would solidify the foundation of the coaching staff. I would certainly be “all in” for this to happen, and it would be great for the program.
