Nebraska Basketball: Bobby Lutz would be a tremendous assistant hire
Nebraska Basketball appears to have another assistant in the fold.
Nothing like some late-night breaking news to conclude a Tuesday. According to multiple media reports, Nebraska Basketball head coach Fred Hoiberg is continuing to complete his staff. His latest target? Bobby Lutz. The veteran coach appears poised to take a position in Lincoln.
Lutz was at the Nebraska baseball game along with assistant coach Matt Abdelmassih as the head coach threw out the first pitch.

A North Carolina native, Lutz enjoyed success as a basketball coach while he was in the Carolinas. Coaching Carolina-Charlotte, he compiled a 218-158 record. That included five NCAA tournament appearances and three trips to the NIT. In a game like college basketball, where getting and maintaining consistency is about as easy as finding a needle in a haystack, that is certainly an impressive resume.
Lutz has several connections to Hoiberg He was part of his staff in the 2010-11 season at Iowa State and he was an assistant coach with the G-league affiliate for Chicago. The fact that he has worked with Hoiberg on several occasions should work in his favor as an assistant for Nebraska Basketball. Not only that, the fact that he has a winning resume both in the professional and collegiate ranks is awesome. Adding an experienced assistant coach is never a bad thing. You never know what is going to happen throughout the course of the game, and having that experience is definitely an asset.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of the Nebraska Basketball staff shakes out. Already, Hoiberg has hired two extremely competent assistants in Abdelmassih and reportedly Lutz. Nothing is official yet of course, but he is in a great position to take the job and the fact that Lutz was with the head coach Wednesday night is certainly pushing the needle in favor of him becoming a member of the staff. This is certainly a time of change for the program, but it should be a very exciting one. With Hoiberg appearing to take his work on the recruiting trail very seriously as well, it should be a fun time for Nebraska Basketball moving forward.
Lutz has all the qualities necessary to be a viable assistant. Especially for a rebuilding program, experience is key. I’m excited to see the work he does with the program and the kind of knowledge he can bring to the table. Something tells me Nebraska will be excited to have him in the fold.
