A Nebraska Football alum is headed to the professional ranks.

With the mess that the shutdown of the AAF created, it is nice to see  a former Nebraska football player among others landed on his feet quickly. Monday, the Oakland Raiders announced that wide receiver De’Mornay Pierson-El signed with the team.

Pierson-El had a rather transient career in the National Football League before going to the AAF. He spent some time with the Washington Redskins and also spent time with the Montreal Alouettes  of the Canadian football league. His second chance came in the form of the AAF, while he was with the Salt Lake City Stallions.

To his credit, he made the most of his time there just as many other players did. He caught 36 passes for 414 yards. Perhaps the highlight of his time with the Stallions was a nine-catch, 130-yard game. It certainly was reminiscent of games during his time in Nebraska. He also had an eight-catch, 90-yard game as he proved to be a playmaker for the Stallions.

Nebraska Football fans will remember his freshman year fondly. He caught 13 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns. Averaging 14 yards per catch, he proved to be an explosive playmaker. Injuries would bog him down for some of his Nebraska football career and he was never able to show his true playmaking ability again until his senior season. That year, he caught 45 passes for 623 yards and five touchdowns. The yards, receptions, and touchdowns were all career-highs.

Who can forget his four-catch, 87-yard performance against Purdue? Averaging 21.8 yards per catch and also scoring a touchdown, he was truly electric in that game, he also returned a kick for 16 yards to boot. How about the tremendous performance in the Holiday Bowl against USC to end that season? Eight catches for 102 yards and a touchdown is not too shabby. Averaging 12 yards per catch, he was truly a playmaker in that game and was a bright spot in what was truly a heartbreaker for Nebraska Football.

Hopefully, his second stint in the NFL goes smoothly. He joins a stacked Oakland Raiders receiving group that includes Tyrell Williams and Antonio Brown. If nothing else, he will be able to learn from two of the most skilled players in the National Football League. Nevertheless, it is great to see him get a chance at the professional ranks, and I will certainly be following his progress closely.
