Nebraska Basketball: Keeping Donovan Williams should be priority
Nebraska Basketball needs to make Donovan Williams a priority.
With so much turnover going on within the Nebraska basketball program, several recruits are deciding their futures as we speak. One of those recruits happens to be Donovan Williams. A playmaker in the 2020 class, Williams is deciding his future with the program as roster turnover continues.
Williams is viewed as the top prospect in Nebraska. Overall, he is ranked 168th overall and the 40th overall shooting guard in the 2020 class per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He was recruited by assistant coach Michael Bradley, who now is with the Indiana Hoosiers.

What could Williams bring to Nebraska Basketball? For one, he has a tremendous ability to drive to the basket. That allows him to get buckets of these and due to his six-foot-eight frame, he can absorb contact and finish a play. He also shows tremendous passing ability, and has excellent court vision. This allows him to find open players on the floor, and gets other players involved over the course of the game. He could fill a role similar to what James Palmer Jr. did while he was in Lincoln.
So far, Williams is not making a decision on the status of his commitment. As he told Brian Snow of 247Sports, he will talk with Coach Hoiberg on Monday in regards to his commitment. Right now, he plans to take things slowly.
"“Me and Coach Hoiberg have talked a few times. We actually talked (Saturday) morning. He is a good dude. Me and my parents are still evaluating things. We are going to see if I am going to open things up or not. We are going to see how things go, and what direction I am going to go in.”"
At the very least, this sounds like Williams is open to playing for Hoiberg. That is certainly a good sign. If Nebraska Basketball can retain Williams, that will help them offset the burden of the decommitments of the 2020 class. So far, Nebraska has the top 2020 class in the country, and that is largely due to Williams being a part of it. Nebraska Basketball needs to do everything in their power to keep Williams in Lincoln. If he decided to stay, that would certainly be a victory for Hoiberg and the rest of the coaching staff.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. One thing is for certain: Nebraska Basketball is going to be a part of a lot of tough decisions in the coming days. Hopefully, they can come out on the right end of things and in this case, keep Williams in Lincoln.
