Nebraska Football is maturing before our eyes.
It is perhaps the worst kept secret that Nebraska Football has a lot of talented veterans on both sides of the ball. From defense to offense, each unit has several key players that can make an impact right away. As another year of maturity factors into how the Nebraska Football team conducts business in the 2019 season, that maturity is also showing up on the football field. It is something like that that can turn a team from a 4-8 record to a winning record real quick.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, head coach Scott Frost noted that his team is beginning to police themselves in a way. That is certainly good to hear, and can only mean good things for the program moving forward.
"“Players are coaching each other. They’re fixing things that the coaches don’t have to … We’re getting closer,” Frost said. “It’s a lot easier to coach that type of team.” Though Frost works closest with the offense, he was offering a compliment for his full team. “Maybe the defense didn’t come out with quite the same intensity today as they did earlier on in the spring, but they found it.”"
I love to hear this. It speaks to the maturity of the team and how far they have come from a year ago. Last year, this probably would not have been the case. After all, the circumstances did not call for it. Frost was a brand-new coach that needed to make his mark, and let the players know who’s boss. Now that has been established, the players are making it their program in a way.

Make no mistake, I am not saying they are completely running the show. Rather I am saying that they have taken control of things on the field. It goes back to accountability that I’ve talked about so many times. They are showing that they do not need to be babied by the coaches. They want to take responsibility into their own hands.
I love to see this, because that could make the difference in a game between winning and losing. For instance, what if a coach has difficulty communicating with a player due to how loud a certain environment is during the game? The players can take over in that instance by getting the correct call and making sure that their teammates are lined up properly. This applies to both sides of the football. I certainly hope that this trend continues not just this year but in future years at well. It helps build a winning culture.
With the spring game only a week and change away, it sounds like Nebraska Football is making tremendous progress both in terms of playing the game and figuring out the roles of the team. The rebuild for the Nebraska Football program may be happening a lot quicker than we thought. Scott Frost knows what he is doing, and now it appears the players are willing to carry that same type of energy in everything they do.
