Hunt wants to take on that role for Nebraska Football.
As preparations begin for the 2019 season and the season itself gets closer, one of the things Nebraska Football fans should be watching is the play of the wide receivers. After all, with the departure of Stanley Morgan Jr., there is going to be a big void left at the wide receiver position. We have already talked about guys like Kade Warner wanting to step up at the wide receiver position. However, there is a name that is emerging out of spring ball that we haven’t talked about before. Sophomore Andre Hunt could be a dark horse candidate to replace Morgan’s production.
It helps that he thinks so highly of Morgan as noted by Michael Bruntz of 247Sports. Honestly, he could not have picked a better guide to idolize at the position. Morgan was a 1,000-yard receiver and Hunt aims to put up those same type of numbers as well. Although that may seem like a crazy, unreachable goal, I give him credit for having that desire to be a playmaker. His track record at the high school level tells me that he can put up the same types of numbers Morgan did for Nebraska Football. Playing for Paraclete High School in California, Hunt snagged 67 passes for 1,185 yards and 21 touchdowns in his senior year.
He was originally committed to USC, but after taking one final visit to Nebraska, he decided that Lincoln was the place for him. It must be exciting for him knowing that he could be thrown into the mix right away with a solid spring and ample preseason work. If he is anything like Morgan, he should be able to be a playmaker for Nebraska Football for years to come.
"“Stanley, just watching him practice every day it made me want to be better and fill his shoes in a different kind of way,” Hunt said. “Everybody wants to be better than the next man. I want to be way better than Stanley. That’s just my goal coming in.”"
If he is way better than Morgan, we could have a star in the making here. With a receiving group looking for a direction, hunt could be the guy to provide that. It would be a lot to ask out of a sophomore who only appeared in two games last season. Nevertheless, if he is willing to take on the challenge, I say let him have at it. Giving Adrian Martinez more weapons to throw to is not exactly a bad thing. If anything, more weapons could put Martinez at the top of the Heisman conversation.
There is no doubt that there is a lot of talent at the wide receiver position. Many of the players are still very raw skill wise however. Although Nebraska Football may be lacking depth at the position right now, they have put themselves in a good position for years to come with their recruiting and amount of young players on the roster. The key now is to make sure they develop and continue to build on the work they have accomplished so far. If they can do that, it will be a fun couple of years in Lincoln.
