Nebraska Basketball: Takeaways from Fred Hoiberg’s press conference
Hoiberg will demand a lot from his team
Hoiberg is going to expect a lot out of his players. He made a very clear during the press conference, and he revealed details about what he said to them after he was hired. In a report from Michael Bruntz of 247Sports, he gave a little insight into the identity of the team.
"“My message has always been to the team if we’re the hardest playing, most together team, we’re going to have a chance,” Hoiberg said, “and that’s what we’re going to strive to do.” “I played 10 years in the NBA, and I didn’t play because I was the most athletic. I didn’t play because I was the most gifted. The reason I played was because I was the hardest worker. Nobody was going to outwork me and that’s how I got to that (NBA) level and that’s what I’m going to demand and expect out of my players.”"
Of course, that sounds good, but can he execute it? My guess is yes. Throughout his NBA career, he wasn’t the type of player that would make the front page of a newspaper, but he did work hard. As he alluded to, that’s why he stayed in the NBA. A couple of occasions last season, I thought Nebraska basketball focused a little bit too much on individual talent and getting the ball to individual players rather than playing collectively as a team. To their credit, they managed to figure it out, so much so that they were able to make a deep run in March. Even still, it was undeniable that they had missed a ton of chances at wins during the regular season by playing hero ball.
As it stands right now, Nebraska Basketball has a couple of players that could make an impact next season. If those players can play together, this could be a fun season for Nebraska basketball. There will undoubtedly be growing pains, but that is to be expected. The team will begin practicing after the Final Four, and he will begin recruiting on Wednesday. A new era of Nebraska Basketball is set to officially begin.
