Nebraska basketball officially fired Tim Miles on Tuesday, which now paves the way for the Huskers to get their preferred head coach Fred Hoiberg.
After months of speculation and for some, years of frustration, the tenure of Tim Miles as the head coach of Nebraska basketball finally ended Tuesday, officially this time.
The move was expected but following the Huskers loss to TCU in the NIT Sunday night, it seemed like it was only going to be a matter of time before Miles was axed and athletic director Bill Moos sent out the official word that Nebraska basketball would indeed be searching for a new head coach.
Here is what Moos had to say about Miles via his announcement:
"“Tim Miles is a good basketball coach who has put his heart, soul and energy into the Nebraska men’s basketball program over the past seven years,” Moos said. “Ultimately, we have not maintained a level of consistent success and stability on the court, and after a full review I have made the decision to move in another direction for the leadership of our program.”"
Miles coached the Nebraska basketball program for seven years and put together three winning seasons, including a 19-17 record this past season. The last two years also included berths in the NIT.
However, his crowning achievement was getting the Huskers back to the NCAA tournament, which he did back in the 2013-14 season. One of the biggest nights in Nebraska basketball history was when NU beat Wisconsin inside the Vault to help solidify their bid.
That was a great night and back then, there seemed to be a lot more like it on the way. Yet, the Huskers followed that up with three consecutive losing seasons, before winning 22 games a year ago but still being left out of March Madness.
This year, with James Palmer, Glynn Watson Jr. Isaiah Roby and Isaac Copeland, the Huskers seemed to have their best team in years, some even thought their best team ever. No Nebraska team has ever won a game in the NCAA tournament and this felt like a year it could happen.
In the end, it didn’t and it proved to be the death knell for Miles, who finished with an overall record of 116-114. Now, the attention turns towards hiring his replacement and from all the reporting on the topic, it sounds like Fred Hoiberg will be the guy.
In the coming days, we will figure out if that’s true. But what we know today, is that the Tim Miles era is over.
