Nebraska Football should have a very strong secondary in 2019.

Throughout the course of spring ball, we have talked at length about the Nebraska Football defense and  expectations coming into the 2019 season. Honestly, we have focused a lot on the defensive line in the linebackers while completely ignoring the secondary. With a guy like Deontai Williams in the secondary, he is impossible to ignore.

Williams had a strong 2018 season. He recorded two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, two interceptions, and two pass breakups. He was tied for the team lead in interceptions, forced fumbles, and fumble recoveries. His best game of the season came in Nebraska’s loss at Wisconsin on October 6. In that contest, he recorded five tackles, his most in any game that season. We would be remised if we didn’t mention his impressive play in November. He recorded a forced fumble in back-to-back games against Ohio State on November 3 and Illinois on November 10. He made the most of his opportunities, and now he figures to have a bigger role in the 2018 season.

Playing in 12 games last year, he certainly has enough experience to carry the cornerback unit. We have already heard many players at the position making strides including Lamar Jackson and DiCaprio Bootle. If Williams can make the necessary strides to be successful, the Nebraska Football secondary should be one of the best in the conference. They have enough upperclassman leadership that there shouldn’t be too many hiccups in the secondary. Now that he has played a year under head coach Scott Frost and figured out the way Frost does things, that should only benefit Williams as well.

This is certainly an important spring ball for him. Although he is only a sophomore, he has enough potential that he could be a leader in the secondary by season’s end. Over the next couple of weeks, playing well will be important for him. Not only should the program make sure he is playing well, they should also make sure he is progressing and taking the lessons he learned last year and building off them He is definitely going to be a player to watch during the spring game. Perhaps more than any other position on the field during that time, the secondary plays a big part in the game. That will be just one of the many storylines to watch during what should be a fun day.

Williams has talent. Now, he just has to build on it. Of course, that’s easy for me to say sitting at my desk, but I believe he can do it. If he can become an even better
