Trueblood has been a huge spark for Nebraska Basketball.

There’s this old cliché in sports that says players need to make the most of their opportunities. We have heard it time after time after time. However, if it has been applicable to any Nebraska Basketball player over the past couple of days, Johnny Trueblood would certainly fit that distinction.

Trueblood’s sudden rise to stardom if you will came in the regular-season finale against Iowa. It only continue to grow throughout Nebraska’s short-lived run in the Big Ten tournament. Heading into the first game of the NIT tournament on Wednesday, I was intrigued to see what Trueblood would be able to do. He did not disappoint.

In 31 minutes of action, the junior recorded six points, seven rebounds, and five assists. He did a little bit of everything. Although he wasn’t efficient, he provided a tremendous spark on a night where Nebraska desperately needed one to  salvage their season. Last night, Trueblood and company did more than just salvage their season. They fought hard to earn a date with TCU on Sunday. The Horned Frogs are the top team in the tournament and Nebraska Basketball will have their work cut out for them.

Trueblood will probably figure to be a huge part of that. In a season where the unexpected has occurred, he has been a welcome surprise. He has done a nice job of adapting to any situation thrown his way. Sometimes, that can be difficult for a player especially considering that tournament wins are at stake now. The fact that Trueblood has remained calm and collected in these emotionally-charged environments has been impressive to watch. It’s almost like he is a calming influence at times for Nebraska Basketball.

This has been his moment to shine. You hear all the time about players finding their groove late in the season. That’s exactly what has happened with Trueblood. He has finally getting the minutes to show that he can be a dependable player for the Cornhuskers. It’s almost as if he has really come into his own during these roller coaster couple of weeks. He will definitely be exciting to watch on Sunday. He may not be the headliner on a Nebraska basketball team full of talent, but he can get the job done in more ways than one.

I’m happy for him. A guy who averaged 1.8 points per contest during the regular-season is now providing a huge contribution to Nebraska Basketball in the most important moments. That is what college basketball is all about.
