Mike Williams

With the departure of Stanley Morgan Jr. to the National Football League, someone is going to have to fill the void at receiver for Nebraska football. Granted, that is easier said than done. Morgan’s production will certainly be missed. Nevertheless, someone has to step up and that could include a receiver that did not necessarily have the spotlight last year. Mike Williams would fit in that category.

He caught 12 passes for 122 yards in 2018, and he showed explosion from the position. Averaging 10.2 yards per catch, he gave a preview of what could come in 2019. His best game last season came against Northwestern. In that contest, he snagged three passes for 41 yards, including a 24-yard grab that was his longest of the afternoon. Averaging 13.7 yards per catch in that contest, he showed that he could stretch the field and give defenders headaches. He certainly gave himself something to build on in the 2019 campaign.

The question will be whether or not he can do so. Sometimes, an expanded role can be overwhelming and too much. Currently, he is behind Kade Warner at right wide receiver on the depth chart per OurLads.com. That should be an interesting position battle heading into training camp, and it is where Williams can continue to earn his stripes. Proving himself will start there and I have no doubts that the junior will be able to do it.
