Brenden Jaimes came to the Nebraska football program with tons of upside and now that he is getting set for his junior season, he is living up to it.
When you talk about building a quality football team, especially on the offensive side of the ball, it usually starts with a few positions but one of the most important positions outside of quarterback comes at left tackle and thanks to Brenden Jaimes, Nebraska football is in good shape.
Of course, Jaimes has been playing tackle for the past two seasons for the Huskers after he committed to Nebraska football back in 2017. At the time, Jaimes was a 6-foot-5, 250-pound, three-star offensive tackle with tons of upside but a long way to go.
Thanks to some injuries and growth in his body, he was forced onto the field and as a freshman, he held up reasonably well. Then, after Jaimes got plenty of hype throughout the 2018 offseason, Jaimes put together another really strong campaign and has already started 21 games during two seasons with the Huskers.
Now that Nebraska football is back on the field these past two weeks for spring practice, Jaimes is looking to make another jump and not just one on the field. According to a report from Evan Bland of the Omaha World-Herald, Jaimes continues to grow as a physical specimen, as he has now climbed up to 298 pounds, but in addition to that, he is taking steps as a leader too.
While Jaimes is certainly the most talented offensive lineman for the Huskers heading into this season, after losing two senior starters up front, Nebraska is in need of some leadership and that’s where Jaimes is trying to take the next step in his development.
So far, it sounds like it has gone well according to what Bland reported after observing practice this week and for the most part, there is a good feeling surrounding the offensive line even though it will have some fresh faces starting this fall.
As I said, building a great offense obviously requires a great quarterback, as well as some good skill guys at running back and wide receiver, but if you are going to have a wide-open offense, you better have guys that can pass protect and be able to handle pass rushers one-on-one.
And in Jaimes, Nebraska football has that, which should ensure the protection of its most important player, Adrian Martinez.
