Luke McCaffrey is turning heads for Nebraska Football in spring practices.

So far it appears that a new arrival has come into the Nebraska Football program making a great first impression. Quarterback Luke McCaffrey was brought into the program is a highly-touted recruit. This Monday began the second week of spring ball and perhaps we are beginning to see why.

More from Husker Corner

As the brother of Christian and Dylan McCaffrey and the son of former Denver Broncos great Ed McCaffrey, he could have easily walked into Lincoln expecting success right off the bat. However, that does not appear to be the case. By all accounts, he is a tremendous learner, and puts himself in the best position to succeed. Part of is making sure he puts in the work with quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco. With Nebraska football orchestrating a fast-paced offense, it can be a daunting task for any new signal-caller to come in and learn it right away. However, that does not seem to be a problem for McCaffrey. The quarterbacks coach told the Lincoln Journal-Star as much on Monday.

"“He knows everybody’s lined up, he knows the formations, he knows the calls that are attached to those formations and all that business,” Verduzco said. “The thing that kind of maybe will slow him down a little bit is, once he’s getting ready to make the snap count, he might hesitate because he’s not quite sure where his eyeballs belong. That will get better.“He really has had no issues with the tempo part of it.”"

This is great news if you’re a Nebraska football fan. More likely than not, McCaffrey will be the starting quarterback for Nebraska football once Adrian Martinez leaves Lincoln. The fact that McCaffrey has shown a willingness to learn is a great thing. From the sounds of it, he gets that this quarterback competition is an open one. Will he start over Martinez this season? Probably not. Even still, playing with that competitive fire will only lead to good things for McCaffrey in the long run.

As far as the difficulties with vision and knowing where his eyes belong,  that should not be too much of a concern. All of this must be a lot to take in for a quarterback in a new system. That will come with time. Right now, he needs to know the playbook. So far, it seems like that’s exactly what is happening.  That can only mean good things down the road.

McCaffrey may be the future of Nebraska football. So far, he is putting in the work to make it hard to say otherwise. He should be able to make life after Adrian Martinez that much easier.
