Nebraska football running back Maurice Washington is embroiled in a legal controversy and here is a look at the latest developments.

While much of the focus for Nebraska football is on what’s happening on the field with spring workouts, there was more off-the-field news surfacing Monday about the latest developments in the legal case of running back Maurice Washington.

Washington, who is involved in a legal matter in his home state of California for sending an illicit video to an underage girl, traveled to the state to, according to Nebraska football head coach Scott Frost, be “processed.”

According to a spokesman from the Santa Clara Sheriff’s office, Washington surrendered himself to authorities. That explained the absence of Washington who was not at practice Monday, which caught the attention of the local media.

Here’s what Frost had to say about it following practice:

“Working through his lawyer, I know he wanted to get out there and surrender and satisfy the warrant as quickly as he could,” Frost said. “They had it worked out for today, so Maurice flew out to California (Sunday) night.”

According to the Omaha World-Herald, Washington was charged with both a felony and a misdemeanor and his bail was set at $35,000 with another hearing set for April 10. Washington was then released and Frost said he is expected back Monday night.

Washington was charged with the felony for possession of a video of a person under 18 engaging in or simulating sexual conduct. He was also charged with sharing the recorded content of someone without their permission. That’s a misdemeanor.

In terms of what it means for Washington’s role with the future of the team, that’s hard to know. All Frost would say is that he spoke with Washington and set some expectations for what he would do throughout the spring, but other than that, Frost said a decision would be made with University leadership.

In Washington’s absence, the Huskers are using a slew of different backs such as Wyatt Mazour, Jaylin Bradley, Brody Belt and Miles Jones. It sounds like Washington will be back on the practice field, however, it feels like it will still be in a very limited role.
