Fred Hoiberg

Finally, the perfect candidate for Nebraska basketball might just be Fred Hoiberg, the former Chicago Bulls head coach and Iowa State legend.

When it comes to Iowa State basketball, there is no one that compares to Hoiberg, who was given the nickname as the mayor for his incredible 3-point shooting.

His run as coach of the Cyclones was also spectacular as he led them two a pair of Big 12 tournament titles and four berths in the NCAA tournament. His teams won games in three of the four appearances and reached the Sweet 16 in 2014.

After that, Hoiberg went to the Bulls and went 115-155 in four seasons. Chicago made the playoffs once, but the Bulls were rebuilding and he never really had the talent to be successful.

Now, without a job, it seems unlikely that he would get another NBA job. Following the path of Tim Floyd, another former Iowa State head coach that went to the NBA, with the Bulls, before getting fired, seems more reasonable.

Floyd coached at USC and did well and Hoiberg could follow that same career path. Nebraska is similar to Iowa State and if he built a winner there, he could do it at Nebraska, especially now that basketball is more of a priority.

This might all be for not if Miles is retained, but if the Huskers don’t win another game this season, it seems hard to justify that. But I am not Bill Moos. If I were and I fired Miles, Hoiberg would be my first choice followed by the others on this list.
