The Nebraska Football quarterback will finally have a chance to breathe.

When we talk about the quarterback position for Nebraska football, the first names we mention are Adrian Martinez and Luke McCaffrey. Why not? They are deserving of the hype, and are set to lead the Nebraska football program for years to come. However believe it or not, there are several other quarterbacks who also have talent and skill to help the Cornhuskers. One of them is determined to find his footing in the 2019 season.

Heading into his junior season, quarterback Noah Verdal is looking to find some normalcy in his college football career. He transferred from UCF last year, joining coach Scott Frost and in what was a bit of a weird situation, he was ruled eligible in the middle of the year. That was undoubtedly frustrating for him as he was not able to show what he was truly capable of. It looks like he may finally have this chance to show Nebraska football fans that he is more than just a player following his former head coach hoping for success.

In his freshman year of 2017 at UCF, he appeared in six games. Going 22-of-29, he threw for 276 yards and a touchdown. Admittedly, most of his appearances came in  warm-up-duty, as was the case during his brief time on the field in 2018 for Nebraska. He would go two-of-nine, throwing for 29 yards and an interception. His in-game action would come on October 27 in the Cornhuskers 45-9 route of Bethune-Cookman. Again, it was not a big sample size but he was able to show what he could do nevertheless.

Now heading into spring ball, Frost thinks that Verdal be able to make an impact for the program. That may seem daunting given the talent ahead of him on the depth chart, but Frost knows perhaps better than anyone on the team what his quarterback is capable of.

"“He got a little bit of mop-up duty in one game last year, and had some mixed results, but I know what kind of player he is, and I can’t wait to watch him this spring,” Frost said. It’s one of the reasons why, when asked last week on the radio about his QB depth this year, the coach was quick in his response: “Absolutely feel better about it.”"

It would not be a stretch to say at the quarterback position is perhaps one of the strongest ones on the entire team. That is okay,  not many programs have the luxury of saying that. Do I think we will see Verdal in a game at any point during the season? I would say there is a possibility, perhaps in the same mop-up role that he is accustomed to. Nevertheless, that should only make him want to work harder during this spring ball.
