Martinez will have a big year but doesn’t win Heisman

When it comes down to it, Adrian Martinez had one of the best freshman seasons in the history of Nebraska football. He passed for 2,617 yards and tossed 17 touchdowns to compared to just seven interceptions.

While Martinez is a very good passer and throws the ball accurately down the field. He completed 64 percent of his throws and averaged 7.5 yards per attempt. His mobility is also a factor and while he averaged 4.5 yards rush, that includes sacks, so when he ran, he was very effective and scored eight touchdowns.

There is no question that Martinez will improve his numbers this season and he should easily be able to get past 3,000 yards and get close to 30 total touchdowns, which would only be an increase of five.

For his long term health, it might be smart to limit Martinez’s rush attempts but with more depth at quarterback, it might not be a huge concern. Either way, he’s a dual-threat guy that is going to put up huge numbers this season. But I just don’t see him winning the Heisman just yet, although he will be among if not, the best quarterback in the Big Ten.
