With everything that has happened at running back for Nebraska football, one name to keep an eye on is incoming freshman Rahmir Johnson.

Not long ago, it seemed like Nebraska football was going to be loaded at running back in 2019 and while that might still be the case, there is a lot more uncertainty now then there was.

A lot of that stems from legal issues surrounding both Maurice Washington and incoming JUCO recruit Dedrick Mills, who played for Georgia Tech two years ago. Mills missed signing day because he was in custody after failing to appear in court.

As far as Washington, the issues surrounding him are much more severe than Mills. At this point, no one can really say if Washington will play for Nebraska football next fall or not. Right now, it’s an open question, although the university is certainly standing by him.

There is less reason to question Mills, however, he also ran into trouble at Georgia Tech, so it’s worth asking if he will be a guy the Huskers can count on.

With all that in mind, there is another name to watch when it comes to running back and it’s not Wandale Robinson, although he should impact the position too. No, the guy I am talking about is three-star back Rahmir Johnson, who seems to always get left out of the mix.

Obviously, Johnson doesn’t have the reputation of Mills, Washington or even Robinson, who comes to Nebraska football as one of the top all-purpose backs in the country. Yet, what Robinson isn’t is an every-down back and that’s what the Huskers need.

Devine Ozigbo was that for Nebraska football last season and he rushed for over 1,000 yards. Yet, he is graduating and hoping to get drafted in April. That leaves the Huskers with Washington, who many, myself included, thought would be the starter. Mills, who is a bigger back also should be in the mix.

But with the issues surrounding Mills and Washingon, the door may be open for Johnson, a 5-foot-10 back who is listed at 247 sports as 175 pounds. What Johnson lacks in size, he makes up for in speed. He’s a dynamic athlete and a guy to watch no matter who is around next season.

But, if Washington is unable to play or if Mills runs into more problems, Johnson could be making an impact with the Huskers much sooner than expected.
