Nebraska Football could have a special player on their hands in Smothers.

With the 2019 Nebraska football season quickly approaching, 2020 recruiting begins now. In the case of a certain recruit, he decided on Nebraska football a long time ago. With the possibility that quarterback Adrian Martinez could leave school early, it is only wise of Scott Frost and the program to start stocking up on quarterbacks. For that reason, remember the name Logan Smothers.

Smothers is a three-star dual-threat quarterback. He is the No 637 overall player in his class, the 13th overall dual-threat quarterback, and the 28th overall player in the state of Alabama per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Playing for Athens High School in Athens, Alabama, it is safe to say that he may be a hidden gem of the 2020 class. Nebraska football certainly had some competition when they recruited him.

In addition to Nebraska football, Ole Miss, Louisville, Southern Mississippi, Troy, and UAB all offered Smothers. Quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco handled the recruitment for Smothers. With Smothers committing on July 26, Verduzco added to his impressive resume of recruits. Luke McCaffrey, Martinez and Noah Pola Gates are just some of the heavyweights he has recruited to the program.

What would Smothers bring to Nebraska football? For one thing, he would be the type of player that the Cornhuskers could rely on to lead their entire offense. He threw for  2,041 yards, 14 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He also proved he could do it with his feet. He carried the ball 110 times for 719 yards and eight touchdowns. In a conference like the Big Ten where offense can be found almost every Saturday, Smothers would fit well.

Currently, Nebraska football has a crowded quarterback room. Andrew Bunch, Matt Masker, Martinez, McCaffrey, and Noah Vedral all have the opportunity to man the position. However, in a few short years, Martinez and Bunch may not be around. That leaves an open competition for the rest of the Nebraska quarterbacks. If that happens, Smothers will have as good an opportunity as any of them.

There is no doubt that head coach Scott Frost and the program are looking to make splashes on the 2020 recruiting trail. Why not? The program landed some real gems for 2019 and they might as well keep the good momentum going.  In particular, it seems the staff has a knack for recruiting quarterbacks. With the position being so central to the offense of a football team, that is certainly not a bad thing.
