Nebraska football was smart to extend an offer to Yary.

With National Signing Day 2019 in the books, it is time to turn the page and focus on the 2020 class for recruiting. Nebraska football is already on the recruiting trail for the class, and Friday, Nebraska football offered 2020 three-star tight end Jack Yary. If that name sounds familiar to some of you, it should. He has some impressive connections to the National Football League.

Yary’s father Ron had a successful football career. He played at the University of Southern California from 1965-1967 and enjoyed a stellar 15-year career in the National Football League. While at USC, the elder Yary was a two-time consensus All-American and won the Outland Trophy in 1967. Success followed him to the NFL as he was the first overall pick in 1968. He was a seven-time Pro Bowler and a six-time First-team All-Pro. Football certainly runs in the family.

The younger Yary is ranked No. 466 nationally,  No. 14 tight end in his class, and is the 49th overall player in the state of California per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. USC is considered to be the favorite, which would make sense as his father went there. In addition to USC, Yary has accumulated offers from UCLA, Arizona State, California, Colorado, and now Nebraska. He was offered by the Bruins on February 8.

When you watch this film, it is easy to see why Yary is a highly-recruited prospect. Measuring in at six-foot-six, 250 pounds, he has tremendous leaping ability as well as great hands. It seems like he catches everything in sight. If there is one thing that does not work in his favor, it is his speed. He is not the fastest guy on the football field, but normally tight ends  are not. He is able to escape tackles quickly and is hard to bring down. He reminds me a little bit of New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski in that respect.

He would bring an instant weapon to Nebraska football and be a security blanket for whoever the quarterback would be. It is always nice to have one of those within an offense and in a conference like the Big Ten, it is almost necessary to have at least one guaranteed player that you know you can throw to. At the very least, Nebraska football has put him on their radar. It will be interesting to see what other offers he gets.
