Nebraska Basketball: 3 takeaways from Huskers win over Minnesota
What are the postseason implications?
Even with a win over Minnesota, Nebraska still has a poor record, especially in the Big Ten and even at 14-11, with a 4-0 conference mark, it’s hard to see the Huskers getting close to an NCAA tournament selection, unless they run the table or go 5-1 to finish and win 2-3 games in the Big Ten tourney.
It seems like a long shot, but according to Kenpom and the NET rankings, the Huskers are a top-40 team, despite their recent woes. Nebraska also owns some quality wins in non-conference play over Clemson, Creighton and Seton Hall, as well as wins over Indiana, Penn State and Minnesota, giving Nebraska six wins over top 60 teams.
The means if they can stay above .500, an NIT berth should be a sure bet for a Nebraska team that has certainly proven it can beat good teams. Making the Big Dance would require something like winning nine out of 10 games and that seems impossible.
But with Northwestern at home and Penn State on the road next, if Nebraska can string together a couple more wins, who knows what could happen. There are six games left and four are against ranked teams, so even if the Huskers win five, it might be enough to at least get them on the bubble heading to Chicago for the Big Ten Tournament.
