Nebraska football is in need of a defensive line coach now that Mike Dawson went to the Giants and one name that comes to mind is Adam Carriker.

The Nebraska football program suffered a tough this week when the Huskers learned that defensive line coach Mike Dawson was leaving his job coaching the defensive line to do the same thing with the New York Giants.

Nebraska football found out that Dawson was leaving this week and after he landed some big recruits and helped develop some key players, his absence will be felt. Now, the question is, who could head coach Scott Frost find as a replacement?

When it comes to college football, assistant coaches are a big deal, that’s why salaries are going up and up. Whether it is player development or recruiting or both, these hires are important and this one will be key for Frost.

While I have no idea what he is thinking, one candidate I would like to see is former Nebraska football standout Adam Carriker a standout Husker that had a lengthy NFL career. Carriker played in the NFL until 2012 and recently, he has been working with the Omaha World-Herald, doing a weekly analysis on Husker sports with the “Carriker Chronicles.”

To be sure, this is pure speculation on my part and I have no idea if Carriker would even be interested in coaching or if Frost would consider him. But thinking back to his days at Nebraska, I think he would be a great fit. He obviously has been around the game and knows it. He was in the NFL after all and beyond that, guys that played in the league can be valuable on the recruiting trail.

Big-time recruits want to play in the NFL and guys like Carriker, who have been there, can provide some key insight. Of course, he hasn’t coached before and that might be a drawback against him, however, Barrett Ruud is coaching linebackers and his previous experience was working as quality control under Frost as UCF.

Assistant coaches have to get there start somewhere and with his ties to the program, Carriker seems like a great fit. The players would love him and I think he would be dynamic on the recruiting trail. And with his playing ability, he certainly has some knowledge to pass along.

This is probably just wishful thinking on my part and I am sure that Frost has some of his own candidates in mind. But, if the Huskers want a guy with ties to the program, who has some experience in the NFL, then Carriker might not be a bad option.

All I know is that I wouldn’t mind seeing him on the sidelines for Nebraska football again and even if it took some time, I think his transition to coaching would be a tremendous success.
