Nebraska Football may have a very special prospect on their hands.

There is no doubt that the 2019 Nebraska football recruiting class is going to be special. In addition to their overall talent, many players have the work ethic to be successful. That includes four-star commitment Luke McCaffrey. He is poised to be the starting quarterback of Nebraska football once Adrian Martinez leaves and he will certainly have big shoes to fill.

Currently, the quarterback room for Nebraska football is filled with depth. As noted by Brian Christopherson of 247Sports, the Cornhuskers currently have three scholarship quarterbacks on campus. Head coach Scott Frost has said  he wants to have five quarterbacks on the roster, and currently they have a lot of options to choose from. In addition to Martinez and McCaffrey, Andrew Bunch, Noah Vedral,  and walk-on Matt Masker remain on the team. It would not be a stretch to say that as talented as all these quarterbacks are, the future looks the brightest for McCaffrey.

Frost has said that he likes what he has seen from McCaffrey. Judging from his words, the signal-caller appears to be focused and ready. That certainly bodes well for when he may have to become a leader under center for the Nebraska football program. The fact that McCaffrey is showing initiative now and he just arrived on campus is certainly encouraging

"“I don’t know if I have seen a kid work harder in an offseason to learn an offense than Luke, and he has been kind of a little bit of the ringleader of that group already,” Husker head coach Scott Frost said this week, speaking of his early enrollees."

That’s what you want out of a quarterback. The fact that he is already leading the group of early enrollees shows me that he is one step closer to being able to lead the program in the future. Even if he does not know what he is doing at the moment in terms of playcalling and playbooks, the fact that he is taking initiative and wanting to play that role of leader certainly looks good to the coaches and the rest of his teammates. It also puts him in a good position to get a potential starting job over the other candidates. So far, it appears that he is doing all the right things.

It will be interesting to see how he handles the rest of the offseason. Will he be able to keep this level of leadership and determination up, or will he succumb to the boredom of having to wait and playing behind the rest of the quarterbacks? My hope for him is that he will continue to demonstrate this level of intensity. His mindset fits in well with the culture that Nebraska football is trying to create, and that’s why  he can be a leader for the future.
