After three days off following Wednesday’s loss to Illinois,  Nebraska basketball continues conference play on the road against a tough Purdue team.

When will this losing streak end? Nebraska basketball looks to right the ship in their first matchup against the Purdue Boilermakers this season. After a disappointing and uninspired performance in a 60-45 loss against Maryland, Nebraska basketball has to stop the bleeding. They will get a chance to do it Saturday night against a Purdue team that comes into the contest ranked 15th in the nation.

The Huskers started off solidly on Wednesday night, playing good basketball in the first half. However, Maryland’s size and strength were too much to overcome. Maryland outrebounded Nebraska by a 53-42 margin and shot a scorching 65.4 % from the field. If there was one bright spot for the Huskers Wednesday, it was the play of Isaiah Roby. He finished the game with 22 points, going 7-of 22 from the field and 2-of-6 from behind the three-point line. He also proved to be a monster on the glass, collecting 14 rebounds on the afternoon.

More from Husker Corner

In the meantime, Purdue had no problem with Minnesota beating them by a 73-63 score Junior guard Carsen Edwards was the leading scorer for the boilermakers. He dropped 17 points on six-of-20 shooting including a 1-of-9 mark from beyond the arc. Freshman forward Trevion Williams scored 16 points of his own on eight-of-11 shooting from the field. It was truly a team effort against a gritty Minnesota team.

Nebraska basketball should be careful of Edwards. He is Purdue’s leading scorer with 24.9 points per game on the season. Rebounding will also be an area that they need to focus on. Nojel Eastern takes care of that for Purdue. He averages 6.6 rebounds per contest and his size should present a challenge to Nebraska basketball.

According to the Kenpom rankings, Nebraska is slotted No. 33 in the rankings while Illinois is slated at the No. 10 spot. Simply put, Purdue has the advantage in this contest. Nebraska is clearly the underdogs here.

Key to the Game

the biggest thing that Nebraska basketball has to focus on for Saturday is limiting the three-point shot. Purdue was tops in the conference in three-point field goals. They average 10.6 three-pointers per game. On the season, they have tallied 234 shots from behind the arc in 22 games. Nebraska needs to focus on closing out on their shooters and making sure they do not give them any space to shoot. If Purdue can make the three-point shot early, it could be a long game for Nebraska.
