Nebraska Basketball: Huskers are just embarrassing themselves now
Nebraska basketball didn’t just lose to Maryland at home Wednesday night, the Huskers embarrassed themselves at the Vault.
It’s time to put an end to any conversation about the NCAA tournament when it comes to the Nebraska basketball team. The Huskers don’t deserve it and if they keep playing as they did against Maryland Wednesday, the season will be over before they know it.
With the 60-45 loss to the Terps, a team Nebraska nearly beat in overtime earlier in the season, the Huskers fell to 3-9 in the Big Ten. Only Penn State, the worst team in the league has a worse record than Nebraska basketball.
Even though Nebraska came into last night’s game at 3-8 in the Big Ten, a win over Maryland could have sparked some kind of run to get back into NCAA contention. Indiana went on the road and upset Michigan State, putting them right back in the conversation.
Nebraska, however, doesn’t seem to have a big win left in it or any fight for that matter.
Yes, the Huskers are without one of their best players in Isaac Copeland. That injury hurt but it shouldn’t have sunk the season. Nebraska basketball still has guys like James Palmer, James Allen, Glynn Watson and others.
Yet, Palmer, who is supposed to be one of the best players in the Big Ten, was a complete ghost last night against Maryland. He made just 2-of-13 field goal attempts, which was reflective of a Nebraska offense that shot just 21 percent from the field. 21 percent.
Certainly, Maryland is a very good basketball team, one of the best in the Big Ten. Yet, in the last two home games against Wisconsin and Maryland, the Huskers were considered even money by Las Vegas, only to get blown out at home. Nebraska basketball has frustrated its fans, who are normally incredibly loyal, to the point of leaving early the past two games because it was so ugly.
At this point, this team is done. I hate to say that this team is quit but it certainly looks that way. Maybe they can find a way to get a few wins and claw their way into the NIT, yet even that won’t matter.
This team and this program have quit on Tim Miles. They have quit on themselves and if Bill Moos had any sense, Miles would have been removed from his position a few minutes after the final buzzer sounded Wednesday night.
That’s how embarrassing that loss was and as long as Miles sticks around, it seems the embarrassing defeats will only continue.
