Nebraska Basketball needs to go in a different direction.

Let me start off this piece by saying I usually am not a big fan of calling for a head coach to be fired or for a player to be suspended. At the end of the day, that’s not my call so why should I insist on fretting upon it? However, in watching the majority of Nebraska basketball games this season and given the fact that they started off promising but now are freefalling from postseason play, something needs to be said. I will put it rather succinctly. Head coach Tim Miles needs to go.

I can imagine fans will have their transgressions about last season and the way that Nebraska basketball did not make the postseason. That is certainly fair. They lost a couple key matchups that could have propelled them into  non-NIT postseason play. However, this year it seems as though Tim Miles flaws have really been on full display this year It’s a shame because he seems like a nice human being, but that has not helped his team win ball games. As a matter of fact, it unfortunately maybe one of the reasons why they are not succeeding.

One of the biggest complaints that they have had is the fact that he seems to be a cheerleader more than a coach. Are those accusations fair? I think they are. When watching the games, it seems as though his team is very unprepared. They play a great first half of basketball, and then they seem to sputter out in the second half. Particularly this season with how many talented players are on the Nebraska basketball roster, the fact that they have lost five in a row and have a 13-9 record is unacceptable. There is tons of senior leadership on this team. From James Palmer to Glynn Watson, this team should be a lot better than it is right now.

Are the players performing well as of late? No, they certainly deserve some of the blame as well. However, it has become apparent that this team lacks a killer instinct. Speaking just in terms of conference play, they should have beaten Rutgers, Ohio State, and Illinois. Quite frankly, they should have done better against Michigan State as well. It has been frustrating to watch a team that is so talented freefall into oblivion. That is exactly what Nebraska basketball is doing here.

Since taking over Nebraska in the 2012-13 campaign, this team has enjoyed success, but has always seemed to fallen short. 2017 was the program’s best season under Miles, as they went 22-11 but lost in the first round of the NIT. Other than that,  the results have been a mixed bag. The worst season under Miles came in the 2016-17 campaign when they went 12-19 on the year. They have had some talented teams, they have just not seemed to be able to correlate that into success.

This season is proof of that. Nebraska basketball needs to go in a different direction. Miles seems to be a great motivator, but his team seems to lacked the ability to win basketball games. He has had an admirable run here, but this season in particular, the team looks bored. That is never a good thing for head coach. They lack determination, and the effort at times this year has been unacceptable.

dark. Next. 3 takeaways from game vs. Illinois

Nebraska basketball needs a new fresh face on the sidelines in 2019-20. This team has stopped responding to Tim Miles and that is apparent. He has certainly done his time as the head coach for Nebraska basketball, and a fresh face is needed to turn the program around.
