Nebraska Football lost out on Charles Njoku Friday.

Nebraska football battled hard, but they could not  get their man on the recruiting trail. Three-star wide receiver Charles Njoku made his decision on where he will play football in the fall, and unfortunately he chose UCLA. He made the decision via Twitter late Friday night.

Njoku is the No. 397 player in the class of 2019, the No. 49 wide receiver, and the eighth-ranked player in the state of New Jersey per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

More from Husker Corner

He was recruited to the Bruins by Jimmie Dougherty, who doubles as the program’s offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. He visited the program on January 18. As some of you may recall, he visited Nebraska in early January.

This is a disappointing result for Nebraska football. They could have used his talent and explosiveness to complement the other receivers on the roster. They already have a fair amount of talent at the position in upperclassman JD Spielman and Mike Williams, but they could have used Njoku’s 6-foot-5 frame for important catches in the red zone. They have enough receivers that can get them down the field, but I question how many weapons they have that can be dependable targets in the red zone.

Athleticism and size runs in the family as  Njoku’s older brother David is a tight end for the Cleveland Browns. It is interesting because the younger Njoku has the body of a tight end. It is possible that he could see a position change in the fall. That will be a tough decision that Chip Kelly has to make.

The Bruins certainly got a good player. Njoku’s decision to commit to UCLA is kind of surprising. All throughout this process, it looked as though the wideout favored Nebraska football. This is certainly a tough pill to swallow, but it is not the end of the world.  The Husker still have enough pieces to be able to put together a solid wide receiving unit.

You win some, you lose some. Nebraska football and head coach Scott Frost lost out on a promising prospect Friday, but overall they have had success on the recruiting trail. It is important to remember that. Especially in December, they were on a roll  with their walk-on program and slew of graduate transfers. That alone should make for a relatively quiet Signing Day in February, but overall Nebraska football has put together enough pieces to not only be a contender in 2019 but also in the future.
