Dedrick Mills officially signed with Nebraska football on Monday night and now the former Georgia Tech running back has the chance to make a huge impact.

Nebraska football fans have been anticipating the arrival of running back Dedrick Mills for quite some time. But finally, after an extra-long wait, Mills officially signed with the Huskers Monday night.

The announcement by the Nebraska football program was a welcome one for fans who have high expectations for Mills, who one ran for 771 yards as a freshman running back at Georgia Tech. That came back in 2016 when he also scored 12 touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets.

Last season, Mills played in junior college and has been committed to Nebraska but didn’t sign on early signing day. He was in court because he had failed to appear, which stirred up some controversy with his previous issues at Georgia Tech.

Yet, now that Mills is signed and set to join the Huskers this summer, it’s a huge get. It’s not like Nebraska was going to be weak at the running back position with Maurice Washington coming back, as well as some talented incoming freshman led by Wandale Robinson, one of the top all-purpose backs in the country.

But the Huskers are going to be without Devine Ozigbo, their top rusher from last season. Ozigbo, who went over 1,000 yards and will be graduating and hopefully getting a chance to show his worth in the NFL.

While Washington flashed this past season, it remains to be seen if he can carry the load as the starter, especially with his lighter frame at 195 pounds. Mills, on the other hand, is 5-foot-11 and 225 pounds. He is a more physical runner and he can fill the void left by Ozigbo for an inside, power runner.

That would leave Mills and Washington as the primary backs with Robinson also getting some work at both running back and slot receiver, which is something that seems likely. Robinson was a wide receiver in the All-American Bowl and also said the ability to play both positions is one reason he came to Nebraska.

However, head coach Scott Frost uses to deploy his backs, with Mills in the fold, it’s safe to say that Nebraska football is going to be loaded with talented ballcarriers again in 2019.
