Nebraska Football seems to have made a good impression over the weekend.
It was a big weekend for Nebraska football as several promising recruits came to Lincoln to check out the program. What’s even more promising is that many of them seem to have come back with rave reviews.
Soni Fonua is no exception. A JUCO prospect, the strong-side defensive end from Salt Lake City, Utah hails from Mesa Community College. A three-star prospect, he is ranked No. 126 overall, the 11th overall strong-side defensive end and is the 14th -ranked player from the state of Utah per the 247Sports JUCO Composite Rankings. In addition to Nebraska, he also has offers from Oklahoma State, Adams State, Arizona, and Hawaii. He is scheduled to visit Oklahoma State on January 25.

"“(Coach Dewitt) sees the vision for me,” Fonua said. “That’s what he told me. He said he wants me to come in and get the job done and do what’s right.”"
Fonua had a great season this past year for Mesa. In nine games, he recorded 43 solo tackles and 51 tackles overall. His best game of the season came on November 3 against Scottsdale. In that affair, he recorded nine tackles including four for a loss.
Watching his highlights, one of the first things I noticed was that he exploded out of the backfield. As soon as the ball was snapped, he faced to the ball carrier and made a play. He could be very helpful in the run defense department for Nebraska. In particular, against teams like Northwestern and Iowa, both of whom tend to run the football a lot, that could be very beneficial. He is by no means a one-dimensional player, but he certainly excels at the run. Sometimes, teams need to have specialists and Fonua would fall into that category. He would bring an immediate run-stopper to Nebraska and he has the talent to make an immediate impact on the field.
Fonua posted a picture of him at Nebraska on Sunday. It certainly was an exciting preview of potential things to come.
It will be interesting to see if Nebraska football could land Fonua. He would be a huge get for a program that has been on the upswing on the recruiting trail. Scott Frost has made it clear that he wants to be able to compete with the likes of Alabama and Clemson, and landing Fonua could be a step in the right direction. With Signing Day only a few weeks away, Nebraska football only has a few more opportunities before then to do their homework on this 2019 class. If nothing else, it should make Signing Day exciting for the program and fans alike.
