With it being Christmas Day, it’s a great time to look back at the best gift Nebraska football fans have gotten in a long time — Scott Frost.

It’s Christmas and that is always a great time to reflect and speaking of reflection, it’s interesting to reflect back on last December for the Nebraska football program because that is when things changed for the better with the hiring of Scott Frost.

While the day Frost was officially hired is now more than a year ago, Dec. 2 is still a meaningful day. That was when Nebraska football officially announced Frost as head coach. Of course, he would also spend that month coaching UCF and eventually led the Knights to a win in the Peach Bowl, but from that point on, he was a Husker again.

And the last 12 months, Frost has been the gift that keeps on giving.

The Huskers went just 4-8 in Frost’s first season in Lincoln but as the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Nebraska football had gotten away from a lot of things that made it successful. There was no discipline and Frost needed to weed out the problems.

That took some tough love. It also caused a lot of growing pains and when quarterback Adrian Martinez went down with an injury, Nebraska football had to turn to a walk-on after their backup transferred before the season opener.

Things got really bad before they started getting better. The Huskers started 0-6 for the first time in program history, however, Frost never wavered in his approach and Nebraska won four of its last six, with the losses being narrow defeats to Ohio State and Iowa, on the road.

Certainly, Frost was hoping for more than a four-win season, but he did find Martinez, who is already one of the Big Ten’s best quarterbacks. The quarterback finished second in Big Ten Freshman of the Year voting, while also earning Al-Big Ten Honorable Mention.

Led by a dynamic quarterback and Frost’s brilliant play-calling ability, the Huskers racked up 400 yards of total offense or more in eight of the last nine games. Then, he just put the finishing touches on the best recruiting class in the Big Ten West.

The future is incredibly bright in Nebraska and it’s because of Frost. He’s the perfect coach for the Huskers and he is going to be the gift that keeps on giving for a long time to come for Husker nation.
