Nebraska Football may have a budding star on their hands.

Darien Chase. Nebraska football fans should become familiar with that name. Soon, he will be a big part of Nebraska’s offense. The 6-foot-1 athlete may be listed as that on all the recruiting sites, but pretty soon the Nebraska coaches will find a position for him. When they do, the rest of the Big Ten should watch out.

Perhaps even more interesting is that Chase was a late recruit. The program did not even offer him until October, but looking at the numbers it was easy to see why they finally followed through with one. Chase recorded 3,324 receiving yards in his high school career and he had a tremendous Junior campaign. He totaled 1,005 receiving yards and capped off his high school career with an equally impressive senior year. He recorded 1,004 yards, proving he was not just a flash in the pan. He also totaled more than 4,000 all-purpose yards. To put it simply, Chase can ball.

What can he bring to Nebraska? His speed is perhaps his greatest asset. As a defender, you have to make sure that you wrap him up cleanly and efficiently or else Chase is going to take that ball into the end zone for a touchdown. Personally, I am not one to get too excited over a prospect’s film. I like to see what they do at the college level before I make any judgment. However, Chase may be an exception here. He has a lethal combination of speed and elusiveness that can help him become an impact player right away.

Receiver is a position where Nebraska possesses a lot of young talent. Jaevon McQuitty is a name that should get more attention next year and so too should Justin McGriff. Although the names mentioned may still be a bit raw in terms of talent, they certainly have a lot of potential. McQuitty appeared in three games last year while McGriff did not see any playing time. I would certainly expect their roles to increase next year.

Because of the depth at the receiver position, Chase may not find a home there. He may find a home defensively. It will be interesting to see where they put him. There is no doubt he has a lot of talent, and he certainly should be able to find a spot on this football team. If I was Scott Frost, I would try to put Chase in an offensive  position just because of the numbers he put up while he was on that side of the football. It will be interesting to see how they utilize his talent.
