Nebraska Football secured a commitment from the top center on the JUCO circuit.

Just because early signing period is over does not mean that programs can’t land players that could help them down the road. Such was the case for a walk-on commitment for Nebraska football. Thursday, Iowa Western center Joshua Wegner announced he would be walking on to play for Nebraska Football. He made the announcement via social media.

Wegner is the nation’s top center on the junior college football circuit per rankings from JCGridiron.com. According to a report from the Omaha World-Herald, he will work on recovering from a torn ligament before reporting to campus for conditioning in the summertime.

This commitment is just the icing on the cake for Nebraska and head coach Scott Frost. After a very successful early signing day on Wednesday, they continue to add talent to their team. If anything, this is another sign that Nebraska should not be taken lightly next year and that there could be big things to come down the road. That certainly seems to be the case as they continue to stockpile a talented 2019 class.

Currently, the Nebraska recruiting class ranks No. 24 nationally and is fourth in the Big Ten per the 247 Sports Composite Rankings. Personally, I think the class will continue to get better and the ranking in turn will get better as we have not even obviously hit February’s signing day yet. I am anxious to see what will happen there.

In watching Wegner’s film, he is very sturdy, and is able to get an advantage on his defender with ease. He is very firm with his blocks, and does not move around when blocking too much. That is certainly an asset to have as a lineman. He is also confident when he blocks, and as soon as he identifies his target he reacts on it right away. That is certainly a good instinct to have. He will bring his versatile blocking ability to Nebraska and should be effective particularly in the passing game if the quarterback has to move around the pocket.

I have to give credit to Scott Frost, he is doing a great job so far in the off-season of identifying needs for this program. If he can continue this momentum up on the recruiting trail, Nebraska should be able to have a top-level program in the coming years. The future is very bright, and fans should be excited for it. All the pieces are beginning to come together.
