While the Nebraska football program got a lot done on early national signing day, the Huskers quickly made it known Thursday that they aren’t done.

If the last name Asante sounds familiar to you as a Nebraska football fan, that’s because it is. It’s the last name that belonged for former Husker standout Larry Asante and hopefully, Nebraska will have another Asante playing for it soon as NU offered Larry’s younger brother Eugene Thursday.

The offer came one day after early national signing day, which opened the early signing period Wednesday. While Nebraska football landed some key guys, including four-star defensive end Ty Robinson, the Huskers are still looking for more edge rushers.

Apparently, that is why Nebraska has offered three-star outside linebacker Eugene Asante, who is also being pursued by teams like Virginia Tech and Maryland.

Asante, who is listed at 6-foot-1 and 212 pounds, is a very good athlete, who has also played running back during high school. Obviously, he has a lot of room to grow, but in the past few weeks, he has been rising quickly on recruiting boards and he has done enough to draw the attention of Scott Frost and the Nebraska coaches.

However, Nebraska isn’t the only team that has started to pay attention to Asante, who also got an offer from Miami Thursday. UCLA and TCU have also gotten into the mix. If you want to see what the fuss is about, here is a highlight video.

As you can see, Asante is an impressive athlete that can do more than rush the passer. He can cover, he can tackle and if grows into his body a little more, he could be an absolute nightmare off the edge. He could also play in a traditional linebacker role and based off his highlights, he seems able to handle that role too.

Versatility and explosiveness. Those are two things Asante definitely brings to the table. Looking at the defense last season, there is no doubt more speed and more athleticism is needed. So are more impact guys and Asante looks like someone who can be that down the road.

It remains to be seen when he will sign, but it seems unlikely that he will make his choice by Friday, which is the last day of the early signing period. That means the recruiting battle could go on into February, so when Frost said the Huskers were hoping to add more pass rush, he wasn’t kidding.
