Nebraska Football has been doing well in recruiting but one player that it needs to sign in 2020 is wide receiver Zavier Betts, a top-50 prospect nationally.
Right now, the Nebraska football program is focused on locking down the 2019 recruiting class and it’s easy to understand why. The early signing period is next week and National Signing Day is right around the corner.
However, at the same time, Nebraska football has an elite 2020 recruit in its own backyard in 4-star wide receiver Zavier Betts and he’s a guy that the Huskers need to give plenty of attention to.
And it’s not just because Betts is from Nebraska. No, it’s because he’s one of the best in-state prospects Nebraska has produced in years. Recently, he was upgraded and moved into the top-50 nationally in terms of the 2020 class. He also ranks as the 11th best wide receiver.
Betts has always been on the Huskers radar and he was actually offered a full ride by Nebraska football back in 2017 when Mike Riley was still the coach. Yet, as his stock continues to grow, it will be more and more important for Scott Frost and company to keep other schools from poaching him.
Frost is trying to build the Huskers back into an offensive powerhouse and he got off to a great start this season. He also has some talented guys coming back next season, as well as newcomers like Darrien Chase who should have a chance to make an immediate impact in 2019.
Yet, the Huskers won’t get many chances to land a top-50 player. In fact, in the last five recruiting class, including this year’s 2019 class, Nebraska has one commit for a top-50 player and just two from players ranked in the top 100.
That may not necessarily change under Frost. Nebraska just doesn’t have the national reach of other programs like Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, LSU, Clemson, Michigan and others. Yet, the Huskers are still able to land plenty of talented players, just look at Wandale Robinson.
But it still doesn’t change the fact that the Huskers won’t get many chances at a top-50, in-state player like Betts. So they have to take advantage of it and if they push hard enough, hopefully, they can him locked in sooner rather than later for 2020.
