Nebraska football experienced more heartache against Iowa Friday. But under Scott Frost those days are going to end soon for the Huskers.

It’s hard to look at the positives right now, especially after Nebraska football lost another heartbreaker to Iowa. But trust me Cornhusker fans, better days are coming and they aren’t going to take that long to get here.

When you really think about it, the Iowa game was a microcosm for the season. Nebraska football started off slow, battled back and looked like the better team in the fourth quarter, only to come up a little short in the end.

This loss to Iowa wasn’t the only close loss. Colorado, Northwestern, Ohio State, Iowa — all close games, all lessons learned.

The lesson that we learned on Friday was that Nebraska football is close…close to getting back to winning games like this. This isn’t a prediction of national championships or even Big Ten titles. It’s a guarantee that very soon, Nebraska is going to get even with this rivalry and it’s going to become one of the best teams in the Big Ten West.

Right now, those teams are Wisconsin, Iowa and Northwestern. Nebraska belongs in that group. In fact, there is no reason the Huskers can’t be on top it, at least every few years. They have the coach they need — there is no question about that and Friday was a sign that the young quarterback, Adrian Martinez, is getting closer too.

The fourth-quarter interception was disappointing. But his two touchdown drives were something special. He converted four fourth downs, a third down and a two-point conversion. He did it with his arm and his legs.

Be honest, when the score was 28-13 in the fourth quarter and Nebraska was lining up to punt, you probably thought, this is about over. Well, one fake punt and two great drives later, Nebraska tied the game 28-28.

Iowa converted its own fourth down and won the game with a 41-yard field goal, but still, that fourth quarter was fun and I can promise you, more days like that are on the way. The fun times will soon outweigh the heartbreak.

Still, this loss to Iowa is a bitter pill to swallow. The season is now over and instead of a triumphant three-game winning streak to close it out, the Huskers have a fourth-straight loss to Iowa. It stinks and there is no way around it.

However, take solace in the fact that better days are ahead and with Frost at the helm and Martinez at quarterback, the wait shouldn’t be too long.
